Sonia's advisory council has 2 new faces
The government has reconstituted the National Advisory Council headed by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, after the previous committee’s term expired on May 31.
The new advisory committee, which focusses on social policies and rights of disadvantaged groups, will comprise 12 members as against 14 members in the previous committee.
While Planning Commission member Mihir Shah and Ashis Mondal, founder of a Bhopal-based NGO, Action for Social Advancement, were the new faces, nine members of the previous panel, N C Saxena, Narendra Jadhav, Pramod Tandon, Aruna Roy, A K Shiva Kumar, Deep Joshi, Anu Aga, Farah Naqvi and Mirai Chatterjee, got extension.However, agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan, bureaucrat- turned-activist Harsh Mander and academician Madhav Gadgil did not find find a place in the new committee. The notification for reconstitution of NAC was issued on Thursday. The term for the reconstituted committee will expire on May 31, 2013.
Deliberating on issues like watershed development, climate-smart agriculture and improving sex ratio at birth at present, NAC will hold a meeting on July 6.
