Ten vehicles were damaged and two sustained injuries in two separate accidents in Byatarayanapura and Basavanagudi in the City on Sunday.

Anand and his wife had a narrow escape when a sand-laden lorry crashed into their house in Ashoknagar in Basavanagudi traffic police limits Sunday morning. Two cars and three two-wheelers were crushed by the lorry, a portion of the house was damaged and the compound wall was reduced to rubble.

The lorry was to unload the sand at a construction site behind BMS College Boys’ Hostel at Ashoknagar.

“I had parked my new two-wheeler, purchased just a month ago, in front of my mother-in-law’s house. In fact, I saw the lorry coming in a zig-zag fashion. I got down immediately and rushed into the house. Within seconds, the lorry ran over vehicles parked in front of the house,” Anand told Deccan Herald.

“There was only one person in the truck. I thought he was the cleaner and he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

Later on, we found out that he had an epilepsy attack and lost control of the vehicle. He was rushed to a nearby hospital,” he said.
The police are expected to arrest the driver soon.

In the other incident in the afternoon, a speeding KSRTC bus rammed a tempo traveller, damaging four vehicles – the tempo traveller, a car and two autorickshaws near Nayandahalli bus stop.

The bus, coming from Mysore, rammed into the  tempo traveller which in turn collided with the car and two autorickshaws. Police attributed the driver’s rash driving as cause for the accident.

Two persons on the bike –– Venkatesh and Siddappa –– escaped with minor injuries. The bus driver immediately jumped out of the vehicle and fled.

Top cop’s take

M A Saleem, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic & Security), told Deccan Herald  that serial accidents had become a menace on City roads.

“A vehicle speeding at about 60 kmph moves 36 m before coming to a halt even when sudden brakes are applied, which is why traffic rules make it mandatory for vehicles to maintain a certain distance between each other.

But no one bothers to follow the rule. Cautious driving is the best solution to end such accidents,” he said.
