Luxuries for the sweet tooth

Last Updated 13 July 2012, 14:16 IST

The smell of freshly-baked breads and a whiff of the incredible aroma of chocolate greet your senses as you enter this dessert café. Shipra Kumar, who has completed her patisserie training from Le Cordon Bleu, London, went after her passion and started ‘Dolci Desserts’. The café is known for its exceptional cakes and pastries.

“I’m very passionate about baking and cooking. I started ‘Dolci Desserts’ to keep myself busy and not as a business strategy. The main focus at the eatery is to provide fresh and good quality food,” she explains.

Apart from the scrumptious cakes and pastries, the café serves short eats such as crispy puffs, tasty sandwiches and mouth-watering burgers. You can also choose from a variety of coffees and milkshakes. However, desserts like the six-layered cake, Oreo cheese cake and meringue are the main reason customers flock in.

“It has been a while since we started ‘Dolci Desserts’ and the response has been tremendous. Some customers grab a bite and opt for takeaway, while the others like to enjoy the ambience and relish their piece of dessert without any hurry,” she says.

Shipra says she had very clear ideas regarding the environment of the café. “I wanted to use white fencing and wooden furniture to create a ‘fun and frolic’ mood that brings to life the street cafes of France and Italy,” she explains. The simple concept of the café is to create a cosy and comfortable atmosphere for people to thoroughly enjoy the aroma of freshly-baked delights.

With moderate prices, the fresh and lip-smacking cakes and pastries are extremely popular among not just the young crowd but also among professionals in and around the area.

You can find people rushing in for a takeaway, a group of friends hanging out or a family quietly enjoying their orders.

Among other desserts, they also take advantage of seasonal fruits to create a creamy gateaux packed with fruits till the last bite, thin cakes rolled with sinful chocolate and strawberry to set you on a roll, rich and gooey cupcakes, tarts baked with freshly-made fillings, moist chocolate cake dribbling with fudge, soft pastry filled with layers of crème, chocolate and ganache, fluffy croissants that are served plain or filled with cream.

“I don’t have a sweet tooth nor am I fond of desserts — but I love making them,” admits Shipra.

“I like to experiment and provide my customers with an assortment of desserts. I recently made red velvet cakes and cake pops, a bite-size cake on a lollipop stick, which was a huge hit among the kids.”

In Italian, dolci means desserts. True to its connotation, the delectable desserts attract people to dine in as well as order for occasions.

“Many people order cakes for various occasions. As of now, we have a fixed menu but we experiment and come out with new additions almost every weekend. It’s been a hit so far and we are hoping to introduce more sandwiches very soon,” says Shipra.

‘Dolci Desserts is located at 18/3, Ali Askar Road. For details, call 080-40977132.
