Subway work in Madikeri stops

Last Updated 19 July 2012, 16:30 IST

The subway work to connect the district hospital building and women and children wing building has been halted for sometime now.

During last March, it was decided to upgrade the road in front of the district hospital and the KRDCL engineers completed the road upgrading work in a span of few days, but the subway work which too was started along with the road upgrading has not yet been completed. Several vehicles including those plying from Kushalnagar and Mangalore-Mysore pass the road in front of the district hospital, causing heavy traffic congestion many times in a day. The pregnant women who visit the district hospital will have to cross the road to reach the maternity wing that exists in the women and children wing.

As even the treatment for children is available in the maternity wing, the women are forced to cross the road to reach the wing, which is a matter of inconvenience.

In order to solve this problem, a tunnel was erected below the road to construct a subway from the district hospital to the women’s wing. But, the work that stopped at the first stage has not been started even after three-four months. Now the women and children have no other option but to cross the road to reach the wing.

The project has been taken up by the Karnataka Health System Development and Reformers Project (KHSRDP) which is part of the Health and Family Welfare Department.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, District Medical Officer Dr Mutthappa informed that the tender for the subway work was given to a company recently. The work would begin after the end of the rainy season, he said.
