Mulayam salvo at UP govt, son Akhilesh accepts criticism

Lucknow Aug 1, 2012 (PTI)

A day after his father Mulayam Singh Yadav fired a salvo at his government, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today accepted the criticism and said he will work towards making the Samajwadi Party chief happy.

"Netaji" (Mulayam) is the leader of the party and can express his displeasure if he is not satisfied with the performance of the government, Akhilesh said.

"Netaji is our leader...if there is any mistake from our side it is natural for him to be unhappy....we will work and and through our works remove his doubts," the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said when asked about his father expressing dissatisfaction at the performance of his government.

Mulayam yesterday warned party ministers and MLAs to pull up their socks and improve the functioning of the four-month-old governemnt.

According to sources, Mulayam, who had set a six-month timeframe for the Akhilesh government after it regained power to bring about a change in the state, issued a warning to his party legislators and ministers to work towards improving government's image or else drastic steps would have to be taken.

At a meeting at the chief minister's residence yesterday in which Akhilesh Yadav was also present, Mulayam reportedly pulled up ministers and legislators warning them that the government needs to work harder to deliver the promises made by the party during the election campaign.

Mulayam, according to sources, without taking names said only a few ministers were doing their jobs sincerely and he was not happy with the working of others and that they should show improvement.

The former chief minister, who also appeared to be unhappy with the conflicting statements emanating from the party leaders on important issues, asked them to desist from it as it caused embarassment to the party and harmed the image of the government.
Mulayam reminded his partymen that Lok Sabha elections are less than two years away and the state government must move quickly to show results.

Sources said that in view of the continued criticism of the government, Mulayam had convened the meeting to review the performance before the completion of the six-month period which he had fixed earlier.
