Mulayam eyes big role for SP after 2014 elections

Following the Bharatiya Janata Party leader L K Advani’s contention that a non-Congress and non-BJP government would assume office after the 2014 Lok Sabha poll, Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav has come out with a similar prediction, however, with the hope that his party would play a pivotal role in the formation of the next government at the Centre.
Addressing a meeting of the party leaders here on Saturday, Mulayam said neither of the major parties would be able to form the government at the Centre after the 2014 elections in which the regional parties would do well.
“Parties other than Congress and BJP will do well in many of the states in the 2014 lok sabha polls,” Mulayam said.
Mulayam hoped that the Samajwadi Party would play a major role if it managed to secure 60 seats from Uttar Pradesh in the 2014 general elections.
He asked party leaders to be prepared for the elections, predicting that the Lok Sabha polls could be held earlier than scheduled.
“The way things are taking shape at the Centre, there may well be early polls,” he added. The Samajwadi Party could leverage its spectacular performance in the Assembly elections earlier this year to increase its tally in the Lower House, especially if polls were to be held early.
The party has already begun the process of selecting a possible list of candidate for the Lok Sabha polls by inviting applications.
