Don’t fell trees in UAS campus: HC
Bangalore, Sep 26, DH News Service:

The High Court has directed the BBMP not to fell trees in the University of Agriculture Sciences (UAS) campus.

The BBMP has initiated a project to construct a 100 feet road connecting Yeshwanthpur and Yelhanka. The 9 km road was aimed at providing a direct link to BIA.  Three former vice-chancellors of UAS - Dr R Dwarkinath, Dr G K Veeresh, Dr K V Devraj -  had moved the High Court challenging the proposal to hand over the University land for road construction. The petitioners challenged the project after the UAS Board of Regents on 18, August, decided to allocate 24 acres of land to BBMP against its own decision. The University campus, as per the submission of the petitioners, had been recommended to be declared as biodiversity hot spot by the National Biodiversity Board.

Notice ordered

The High Court has ordered notice to the government in connection with its guidelines on ward-wise reservation for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) for the BBMP elections.

B Ramakrishna Pai and others had moved the High Court challenging  the government’s direction to assess the Assembly constituencies, identify the wards with SC and ST population and consider the data for reservation. The petitioners, terming the direction unscientific, contended that the Assembly constituencies cannot be compared with BBMP wards as they would not provide a proper picture of the population.
