Bhatnagar award for six from Bangalore

Abhishek Dhar of the Raman Research Institute, Bangalore, was chosen for the coveted prize for his contribution to physical sciences. Giridhar Madras and Jayant Ramaswamy Haritsa of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) were selected for their contribution to engineering sciences, while S K Satheesh from the same institution was chosen for his work on earth sciences.

Amitabh Joshi of the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore, will receive the award for his contribution to biological sciences, while Narayanswamy Jayaraman of IISc, Bangalore, has been recognised in the chemical science sciences category.

Bhaskar Saha of the National Centre for Cell Sciences, Pune, was selected in the biological sciences field and Charusita Chakravarty of IIT-Delhi bagged the prize in the chemical sciences category.

Santosh Honavar of L V Prasad Eye Institute and Venapally Suresh of Hyderabad University were selected for their research work in the fields of medical and mathematical sciences, respectively.

Rajesh Gopakumar of the Hrish Chandra Research Institute, Ahmedabad, was selected for his contribution to physical sciences.

The awards were announced by Samir Brahmachari, Director General, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, at the institution’s 67th Foundation Day celebrations here.

Prime Minister Mahmohan Singh will later give away the prizes. The award comprises a citation, a plaque and a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh.
