Security up near Kaiga power plant

Last Updated 02 September 2012, 18:33 IST

Security has been stepped up at the long-neglected checkpost near the Kaiga Atomic Power Station in the wake of the reported terror threats.

The Police department on Saturday began work on renovating the Halur checkpost, which is in a dilapidated condition for the past three years.

Out of the two checkposts near the plant, the one at the Bare Cross was functioning while another at Halur, located nearly 15 km from Bare, was neglected, sources said.

Following information reportedly given by the recently arrested terror suspects on the plot to strike at the nuclear plant, the police have cleaned the premises and deployed four personnel from the district reserve police.

A police officer told Deccan Herald that the security personnel were not deployed at the checkpost as the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited had not paid a security fee for the last three years.
