Malavika powers to 200M gold
Likith pockets men’s 100M breaststroke title
Malavika V earned the first gold medal for Nettakallappa Aquatic Centre, powering to victory in the women’s 200M freestyle in the State Senior Aquatic Championships here on Monday.
Malavika, who trains at the newly built aquatic centre in Padmanabhanagar, clocked two minutes 11.71 seconds in the four-lap race on the opening day of the meet at the Basavanagudi Aquatic Centre.
The 14-year-old Delhi Public School (South) student overcame a stiff challenge from Surabhi U Tipre of BAC, edging her much senior rival by a narrow 0.19 seconds.
Surabhi took silver in 2:11.90 while Pratima Kollali claimed the bronze in 2:14.52.
Malavika, who trains under MS Bushan at the NAC, had won the National Junior titles in the girls’ Group II 200M and 400M freestyle in Chennai in July.
Another commendable performance came from the BAC’s Likith SP. Likith, the National Junior record holder in boys’ Group II, timed 1:10.62 to bag the 100M breaststroke gold.
In his first competitive meet after the London Olympics, BAC’s Gagan AP won the 800M freestyle (8:37.27) and 400 individual (4:44.34) crowns while his team-mate Aaron D’Souza comfortably clinched the 200M freestyle (1:53.89) title.
