An Adarsh school only in name, not condition

Last Updated 06 September 2012, 17:24 IST

The Adarsh Vidyalaya which was established to give quality eduction three years ago in the premises of Kote Government Primary School in Gauribidanur, is deprived of the basic facilities envisaged in the programme.

Adarsha Vidyalaya is a component of the centrally sponsored scheme of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.

The concept of Adarsha Vidyalaya intends to have infrastructure and other facilities of the same standard as in the case of Kendriya Vidyalayas.

So far, Adarsha Vidyalayas have become functional in 74 educationally backward blocks of Karnataka from 2010-11 onwards.

These Adarsha Vidyalayas have English as the medium of instruction with English offered as first language. Presently these schools are functional within existing accommodation available in the location.

“Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan Samithi RMSA Samithi” is implementing the programme of establishing Model School named Adarsha Vidyalaya through district and block offices of Department of Public Instruction in Karnataka.

The main objectives of this Centrally Sponsored Scheme are : To establish Adarsha Vidyalayas with infrastructure and other facilities on par with Kendriya Vidyalayas together with emphasis on pupil teacher ratio (PTR), ICT usage, holistic educational environment, appropriate curriculum and emphasis on input –output and outcome.

The admission to these school is by entrance examination. The students are admitted to sixth standard. At present standards VI, VII and VIII are functioning.

At the Adarsh Vidyalaya near Kote School has only three rooms in which 180 students are accommodated. The premises is shared by Government Higher Primary School, Government Girls High School and Adarsh Vidyalaya.

For the Adarsh Vidyalaya, a separate campus is needed. However, the talented students selected for this school are deprived of the basic facility.

There is no sign of exclusive facilities like library, sports equipment, uniform, science and computer laboratories. Even an ordinary government school has a computer lab, but the Adarsh school does not have a computer lab.

The teachers here are taken on contract besides it does not have a headmaster. As the headmaster of Government Girl’s High School serves as the headmaster for the Adarsh school, he is unable to do justice to both schools.

It is said that an exclusive building is coming up in the outskirts of the town for the school. But it is not known when this building will come up.
