HC nod for KPSC exams

Last Updated 10 September 2012, 17:11 IST

The High Court on Monday gave the green signal for the conduct of the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) examinations for recruitments to Group ‘A’ and ‘B’ category posts, which include the Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS), by vacating an earlier stay order issued in August.

The court vacated the stay after the State government said that it had resolved to adopt the Central government rules for providing reservation for persons with disabilities in Group ‘A’ and ‘B’ category posts. As for the examinations for the Group ‘C’ and ‘D’ categories, the court, however, continued its stay and has asked the State government to come up with a solution to provide reservation for disabled persons in four weeks.

Hearing a batch of petitions, including one by the City-based Spinal Cord Injuries Association, an organisation working on disability issues, the Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen and Justice Aravind Kumar, had stayed till  September 10, 2012, all the examinations conducted by the KPSC, including the KAS examinations. The Bench had directed a stay on all the examinations till the government identified jobs for the disabled or followed the list issued by the Union government.

The government’s advocate said the State had issued a notification on September 7, 2012, stating that it would follow the Union government reservation guidelines for recruitments to Group ‘A’ and ‘B’.

Submission

Earlier in the day, the High Court registrar made a submission that candidates with hearing and vision deficiency cannot be recruited as judicial officers.
However, candidates with locomotive problems in the lower part of the body could be considered.
