Police not checking cow slaughter: Malhotra

Last Updated 10 September 2012, 19:30 IST

Leader of the opposition, Vijay Kumar Malhotra on Monday strongly condemned the ‘increasing’ instances of cow slaughter and serving of beef in the city.

He held Delhi Police and the city government responsible for failing to take suitable action against the culprits.

Malhotra said as per the Prohibition of Cow Slaughter Act, there is a provision of five-year imprisonment and Rs 10,000 fine for storing or serving beef.

“However, there is an announcement to organise beef party and preparations are being made to serve beef openly in Jawaharlal Nehru University. So far, no action has been taken by the university authorities, police or government against the students who made such announcement,” said Malhotra. “They should be immediately arrested.”

He said cows are being slaughtered in Delhi at a large scale. He added that beef is being brought to the city from Mewat and other nearby areas and it is being served at many places though the government remains silent spectator.

“There is a tremendous increase in the cow slaughter during Eid. Due to vote-bank politics, the government does not take action against it,” he said.

In a letter addressed to police commissioner as well as Lieutenant governor of Delhi, Malhotra appealed to take stringent action against the persons responsible for cow slaughter, importing and serving beef.

Malhotra further appealed to the Muslim leaders to come forward against cow slaughter. He said if the government does not take any action immediately, then the patriots and people who worship cows will be compelled to launch a nation-wide agitation.
The government will be responsible for it, he added.
