Meenakshi's family blames her husband's ex-in-laws for attack

Last Updated 11 September 2012, 20:01 IST

Meenakshi Rana’s family alleges that Parwinder’s first wife’s family may be involved in the attack in which she was shot dead on Tuesday.

Meenakshi was gunned down in front of her four-year-old son by a motorcycle-borne assailant in outer Delhi’s Rohini sector-16.

Most of the family members, including Parwinder, have told police that they had been receiving threatening calls from Ritu’s brother, who hails from Haryana’s Sonipat district. “Meenakshi and Parwinder had been married for the past seven years, but Parwinder has also been fighting a court case with Ritu in Sonipat,” said Meenakshi’s brother Naveen Sehrawat.

Naveen added that Ritu’s brother had been threatening Meenakshi and Parwinder of dire consequences for past some days, but he refused to divulge details. He alleged that the court case may have led to the attack. “Meenakshi had also received a call on Monday. We are sure that Ritu’s brother might have carried out the attack or might be the mastermind,” Naveen said.

Parwinder said he has provided details of the case and threatening calls to police.
On being asked about action taken over the allegation, Mohammad Akhtar Rizvi, additional deputy commissioner of police (outer), emphasised that they have recorded statement of Meenakshi’s family and they are working on the case to nab the accused.

Sources claim that police are trying to trace the owner of a blue Bajaj Discover motorcycle over a registration number noted down by eyewitnesses. “Teams have also been sent to Sonipat to detain Ritu’s brother as he is being seen as the primary suspect,” sources said, adding if he denies involvement, eyewitnesses will be asked to identify him.

As eyewitnesses highlighted that Meenakshi may have known the attacker, police are believed to be treating Meenakshi’s family’s claims as vital evidence.

Meenakshi and Parwinder had shifted to their block B residence in Rohini sector 16 earlier this month. They had been residing at  block F in Rohini sector 16 since their marriage. “While Meenakshi ran a boutique at her home, Parwinder has a small transport business,” said Parwinder’s mother Sunita.
