CCTV footage helps police crack hit-and-run

Last Updated 21 September 2012, 17:13 IST

Finally the N R Traffic police have succeeded in tracing the killer lorry that claimed the lives of mother and daughter duo on the Mysore-Bangalore road recently.

The N R traffic police led by inspector Arun Nagegowda have cracked the hit-and-run case with the help of CCTV footage.

A vehicle initially suspected to be a multi-axle truck, had allegedly knocked down a two-wheeler near K R Mill on the busy highway. Radha (29), and her 10-year-old daughter Shivani of Hebbal in the city were killed while her husband Basavaraj and son Vikas Gowda had suffered injuries. Following the incident, the locals had gone on a rampage, thus damaging the police outpost.

Barring a piece of information given by a police personnel posted at N R police out-post, the investigators had no concrete evidence from the spot, to trace the vehicle.

A CCTV camera installed in front of a hotel opposite to the outpost came handy. The footage of the mishap was derived from the camera, while another camera but belonging to the city police and installed a few distance away from the mill to record only the speeding vehicles had captured the image of that vehicle.

It was from there the investigators could get the registration number. Acting on the same, it was clarified that it was the lorry, not a truck as suspected earlier. The lorry was registered with the RTO at Nelamangala in Bangalore rural district. Though the lorry had been purchased by a Mysorean, the ownership still remained with the previous owner. The present owner had not changed the documents, said the police.

The police were also quick in gathering information about the owner in Mysore as Iftiyar Baig of first stage, Kesare. The driver was identified as M S Yogesha of Molekoppalu village in Mandya district. The lorry driver confessed to the crime, thus solving the case.
