Indian wildcard entrant and former national champion Rushmi Chakravarthi upset third-seed Kyra Shroff 6-3, 6-0 to enter the quarterfinals of the $10,000 ITF Gulbarga Open Women’s Futures championship at the Chandrashekar Patil stadium here on Wednesday.

In the first, Rushmi broke Kyra’s serve in the fifth and ninth games to claim the set at 6-3. But Rushmi was ruthless in the second set as she gave an error-prone Kyra no chance to blank her 6-0.

Meanwhile, second seed Emily Webely Smith of Britain notched up a hard-fought 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 victory over Kinoshita of Japan to reach the last eight.

Kinoshita stretched Emily into the tie-breaker in the first set before the latter prevailed 7-6 (7-4). Emily had it fairly easy in the second set taking it 6-2 to emerge winner.
China’s Zi Yang, the fourth seed, eked out a tough 7-5, 6-1 win over Pei Chi Lee of Chinese Taipei while top seed Wing Yau Venise Chan of Hong Kong put it past India’s Sowjanya Bavisetty 6-2, 6-4.
