Palike rapped over conditions at quarters

The High Court of Karnataka on Wednesday took to task the commissioner of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, following a petition filed by the Palike staff on the poor condition of the quarters allotted to them.

The Court directed the commissioner to inspect the Palike employees’ residential quarters complex at Kumbaragundi near JC Road and submit a report on its condition in 30 days.

S Sheshagiri, a second division clerk at the office of the assistant commissioner, had alleged that the complex was in a poor condition. In his petition, Sheshagiri requested the Mayor to allot him an alternative accommodation, preferably residence number 2 in the ‘B’ block of the residential building on Mission Road.

Hearing the petition, Justice Ram Mohan Reddy summoned BBMP Commissioner Rajneesh Goel to appear in court on Wednesday.

“Why do you see only money? Don't you have concern over people or even your employees? Don't play with people’s life. If building collapses due to poor condition, BBMP and you (commissioner) will be directly responsible,” he said.

Sheshagiri, who has been residing at the plot number 3 of the quarters on JC Road, had applied for accommodation at the quarters on Mission Road. He complained that the JC Road building was not in good condition.

His contention was supported by the jurisdictional assistant executive engineer.

However, Sheshagiri had moved the court when the Palike asked him to shift back to JC Road quarters after the then Deputy Mayor S Harish recommended that the quarters allotted to him on Mission Road be allotted to B S Sunanda, an administrator in the Palike.

Justice Reddy directed Goel to provide alternative accommodation to Sheshagiri.
