With the arrest of three men at Pitampura Metro station, Delhi Police on Friday claimed to have busted a gang of interstate burglars active in Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh for the past two years. Stolen gold jewellery worth Rs 80 lakh and Rs 4.5 lakh in cash have been recovered from them.

Ali Mohammed, 38, Azaz Mohammed, 25, and Mohammad Rashid, 26, who hail from Uttar Pradesh, were held on Thursday. “On verification, it was revealed that they had stolen the jewellery and cash from a house in Hyderabad,” said Sanjay Kumar Jain, deputy commissioner of police (crime and railways).

They have also told police that they used to target locked houses in different societies of Hyderabad and Cyberabad City. The gang used to travel by train from Delhi and after reaching Hyderabad, they used to stay in a lodge.

The next day, they used to commit burglary in the targeted house. They used to break open the locks preferably between 10 am and noon, and after committing the burglary, they used to return to Delhi by train. During interrogation, it was revealed that the gang had been travelling every fortnightly to commit burglaries and on one visit, they used to target more than one house.

The gang leader has been identified as Meerajuddin Malik, who sells jewellery in Meerut.

Cash looted

A toll plaza worker was shot at and Rs 1 lakh was looted from him, police said on Friday. Ateet Kumar, 23, was shot at on Thursday at the Gurgaon-Alwar Highway toll, reports IANS from Gurgaon. Kumar was stated to be out of danger. Police said the shooting appeared to be a case of rivalry between Ramgarh and Rithoj villages. “A few months ago, all the employees from Ramgarh were replaced by people from Rithoj village. We have booked more than a dozen people from Ramgarh for attempt to murder,” police said.
