Last Updated 29 September 2012, 20:15 IST

There was a smile on the face of ginger growers at Shanivarasanthe on Saturday as  ginger was sold at good price.

A kilogram of ‘Gadde Shunti’ was sold for Rs 25, while a sack of 60 kg ginger was sold for somewhere between Rs 1,400 to Rs 1,500 and ‘Thota Shunti’ was sold for Rs 25. Though the ginger was fetching good price in the market, the quantity of ginger arrived to the marker was comparatively less.

The farmers had brought 200 sacks that is nearly three loads of ‘Gadde Shunti’ to the market. The growers had reached the market at 4 am in their vehicles and the traders purchased the ginger, vacated the venue and left for Mysore, Bangalore, Kerala and other places.

“As the quantity of ginger brought to the market was less, it has automatically raised the rates for the ginger. The ginger trade will be carried out for next three to four months. A sack of 60 kg ginger might be sold for Rs 2,000 with in next two months,” said a trader Sayyed Kalim.

With the ginger fetching good price in the market, the farmers were in a happy mood. Shortage of rainfall has affected the majority of crops in the district. Ginger fetching good price is a relief for the farmers who were in distress.
