The parking woes of east Delhi residents are set to ease to some extent as the East Delhi Municipal Corporation is coming up with the first multilevel parking lot across the Yamuna at Babarpur.

While the civic body is in the process of appointing a consultant for the project, the four-storey parking is expected to have a capacity of 500 vehicles.

“The site identified for the multilevel parking is owned by the civic body. Currently, the land is being used as a maintenance store. A consultant for the project will be appointed soon,” said EDMC commissioner S S Yadav.

Officials say it is yet to be decided whether the project will be a fully automated one or ramp-based parking lot.

The project will be taken forward on a public-private partnership model.
“The final decision over the nature of the parking lot will be taken only after the consultant submits the final report. The consultant will have the mandate to suggest the nature of the parking lot as per the space available and needs of the area,” a senior corporation official said.

“A report on the financial viability of the project will also prepared.”
“Whether the parking lot will be developed on a built-operate-transfer basis or the developer will be allowed to exploit a portion of the project commercially will also be decided after the consultant submits the report,” he added.

The site identified for the project is spread over 1,950 sqm. It is located next to an MCD school on the stretch between Babarpur bus terminal and Hanuman Mandir.
According to officials, this location has been chosen as huge commercial activity is seen here and as a result, the entire stretch is clogged with vehicles.

“Both shopkeepers and residents are likely to benefit from the project as the entire stretch has mixed land use,” a corporation official said. Apart from the Babarpur parking, the civic body is also planning to come up with similar projects in other parts of east Delhi.

The civic agency has already identified some locations in Laxmi Nagar, Vivek Vihar, Yamuna Vihar and Wazirabad Road.

“The land in Laxmi Nagar and Vivek Vihar belongs to the DDA. We have already written to them, requesting transfer of the land. We are waiting for their reply,” said Yadav.
