Two police injured in group clash

Two policemen were injured and 20 men were arrested following a clash between two communities over the alleged slaughter of cow for the Bakrid festival, at Kakati alley in the City on Saturday.

The City found itself in the grip of tension after news of a bovine sacrifice, to be followed by a second cow which was being readied for butchering spread by noon.

The police had to resort to mild lathi charge to disperse the crowd and to bring the situation under control.

Abrupt violence

Soon after, however, people  from one community began to hurl stones at Khanjar alley. In the incident, DySP Muthuraj and DySP Ravikumar were injured. Later, a team led by Superintendent of Police Sandeep Patil arrested the miscreants.

Superintendent of Police Sandeep Patil told Deccan Herald that there was no confirmation of a cow being slaughtered in the City. However, a cow has been recovered and its details are being verified.

Though arrests were made shopowners in Kakati, Shanivara Koota, Khade Bazaar, Darbar and Ganapatigalli downed shutters and the areas bore a deserted look.
