Three people were killed in caste violence in two different incidents in Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram district on Tuesday, official sources said.

The victims were on way, in different vehicles, to Pasumponn, the native village of the late nationalist and freedom fighter, Pasumponn Muthuramalinga Thevar, once a close associate of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, on the occasion of Thevar’s 105th birth anniversary.

In the first incident, the driver of a van carrying 13 people to pay homage to Thevar, found himself encircled by a hostile group of another community when the vehicle reportedly strayed into a ‘prohibited route’, notified earlier by the Police for vehicular movement for the Jayanthi, sources said. The untoward incident happened at Pambuvizhunthan village near Paramakudi in which the van driver was clobbered, resulting in his death.

In another incident, two persons proceeding on a two-wheeler for the Thevar Jayanthi at
Pasumponn, were waylaid and fatally attacked by another group near Ponniahpuram near Paramakudi, sources said. Two groups of DMK partymen also clashed in a third incident while returning from there.

Even as leaders of all political parties peacefully paid homage to the departed leader at his memorial in Pasumponn village, Chief Minister J Jayalalitha offered floral tributes to the freedom fighter’s statue in Chennai in pouring rain. Police forces deployment and route security have been considerably stepped up in the tense pockets of the district.
