A 34-year-old painter was arrested when he was rushing towards the railway track to end his life, after allegedly killing his wife at their house at Srigandhanagar in Rajagopalnagar early Saturday morning.

The policemen on patrol at Srigandhanagar casually inquired Rajachari, when he was on his way to the nearby railway track at night. When they noticed blood stains on his clothes, they grew suspicious.

When questioned about it, the painter could not give a convincing reply. He later admitted that he wanted to end his life as he had killed his wife, Uma, a garments factory worker.
The police took him to his house where the Rajagopalnagar police, who were alerted by the owner of the house, retrieved the body of Uma and arrested Rajachari.

Rajachari, from Nagamangala, and Uma, from Nanjangud, were married for eight years and have a four-year-old son Mahadeva. Rajachari suspected that Uma had an affair with her sister’s husband Nagaraj and the couple frequently fought over the issue, police said.

Rajachari is said to have told the police that he had warned his wife against continuing the relationship with Nagaraj. When he returned home from work Friday evening, he found Nagaraj at his house and abused him.

Nagaraj left in a huff and Rajachari slapped his wife during the altercation, the police said.
The house owner, Nagaveni, said in her complaint that the couple continued to fight at night till she intervened and asked them to stop as it was causing a nuisance.

Late midnight, Nagaveni heard Mahadeva screaming and rushed to their house on the first floor. She found Uma, bludgeoned to death with a huge stone, lying in a pool of blood.

Uma’s body was handed over to her relatives after the autopsy at Victoria Hospital. The Rajagopalnagar police have registered a case of murder against Rajachari.
