Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat has prepared a proposal to make use of the available water sources in the hillocks, instead of depending on ground water, for supplying water to the villages, using gravitational force. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 12 crore.

The projects are proposed to be implemented at Chibidre and Kallagunda in Charmadi. The cost of one project would be Rs 50 lakh and another Rs three crore.

In Niddle gram panchayat, the project will be implemented in Barengaya at a cost of Rs three crore. Similar project will also be implemented at Pailara, Aranthodu and Devaragunda in Amaramudnoor Gram Panchayat of Sullia taluk. The cost of the project will be Rs 5.5 crore.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr K N Vijayaprakash said that the proposal is ready and the project will have to be implemented by taking the villagers into confidence.

The CEO said that many a gram panchayats find it difficult to pay the electricity bills, as the Gram Panchayats do not have resources. If the water from the hillocks is supplied using the gravitational force, it will save energy as well as help the Gram Panchayats to save money in the form of electricity bills.

Zilla Panchayat Executive Engineer Sathyanarayana said the proposal aims at making use of the available water springs in the hillocks.

Normally, these water sources flow round the year. The proposal also aims at minimising the drilling of borewells, to ensure supply of water during summer. There are several streams that are perennial in the hillocks,” he said and added that the project is likely to be included in the action plan of 2013-14.

He said similar project has been implemented in Subrahmanya gram panchayat, to supply water from the hillock, at Kammetti. The water source is just seven kilometres away from Subrahmanya.

The official said that in Subrahmanya, the water tank is situated on the slope. The tank is covered with grills to check the flow of weeds and other particles.

Later, the water passes to water treatment plant, which is situated just a few metres away from the tank. As the water flows through sand bed, it gets purified on its own. From the purifying unit, the water gets supplied to the storage unit.

As the storage unit is built at a height, the water is supplied to the villages through gravitation force.
