Man loses life to 'police brutality'

Cops force bottle of alcohol down his throat

A 42-year-old man died allegedly after two policemen poured a bottle of alcohol down his throat after he refused to pay them Rs 20,000 as bribe in Outer Delhi’s Begampur.  The two officials were suspended and sent to police lines.

An investigation has begun into the matter.

The incident took place at Rohini Sector 20 in Outer Delhi. Suresh, a resident of Sector 20, who is involved in alco-hol smuggling, was picked up by two officials of Begam-
pur police station on Diwali night. 

The officials came in a Santro car to Suresh’s house and demanded Rs 20,000 as bribe. Suresh pleaded that he had no cash at home and it was Diwali night.

They then picked him up and said were taking him to police station, said Rakesh, the victim’s brother.

He alleged that when Suresh repeatedly pleaded with them to leave him, the duo forcefully held him in their car and forced him to gulp a bottle of liquor and later dumped him near his home.

“He managed to come into the house, but when his condition started deteriorating,
he told that they poured a full bottle of alcohol into his mouth,” alleged Amit, victim’s relative.

Suresh reached his home and within few minutes lost consciousness.

He was rushed to a private hospital at Paschim Vihar area, where doctors declared him brought dead.

The family members protested outside the police station demanding justice. When senior officer assured them that a case will be registered against the police officials and proper action will be taken, they agreed to send the body for post-mortem. 

The police officials were identified as Jaibeer and Bhagwati. The two, who held the ranks of head constable and constable, were suspended and sent to police lines.

Meanwhile, investigators have started a probe into the matter and are questioning both the police officials and the victim’s relatives.
