East Bengal climb to the top with big win

East Bengal moved to the top of the I-League ladder with a 3-0 win over Churchill Brothers Sports Club in a sixth round encounter at the Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, on Saturday.

Nigerian striker Edeh Chidi scored a brace and Manandeep Singh added his name to the scoresheet to help East Bengal (14 points) move ahead of Dempo (13) and Churchill (12). Meanwhile, Mohun Bagan belittled the might of Salgaocar SC for a convincing 3-0 win at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata.

Denson Devadas opened the floodgates for Bagan early (5th) before the Nigerian goal poacher Odafa Okolie (20th) doubled the lead to have the home side leading 2-0 at half-time. Stanley Okoroigwe scored in the second half (61st) to make it the biggest winning margin for Bagan in the tournament so far.

Bagan now have 10 points while Salgaocar stayed in the bottom half with five points.
Mumbai FC drub Lajong Mumbai FC scored a crucial 4-1 win against Shillong Lajong FC in Pune. Nicholas Rodrigues, Justin Stephen, Gabriel Fernandes and N D Opara were the scorers for Mumbai, while Sushil Singh pulled one back.

Match postponed

The match between Pune FC and Air India on Sunday has been postponed due to the demise of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray in Mumbai on Saturday.
