In a tragic story, 10-year-old Piya Chaudhary, a victim of corporal punishment, lost her battle for life on Friday night in Jaipur.

She was beaten up by her teacher for not doing her homework due to which she lost vision in her left eye.

The wound in her eye developed into a cancerous tumour due to severe blood clotting. Sadly she succumbed to cancer.  According to family sources, she was cremated at her
native place in Jhunjhunu on Saturday.

The seven-year-old, a first standard student then, was beaten up for not doing her home work in July 2010 by a teacher of Tagore Public  School, Jhunjhunu district with a notebook which hit her left eye causing permanent damage. The child had lost the sight of her left eye due to severe damage. Piya had quit her studies after the incident.

Sonu, her mother has since then been waging a battle on two fronts – to get justice for her daughter even when Piya was treated at various eye hospitals including at the New Delhi’s All India Medical Institute of Sciences (AIIMS).

The school had been denying any wrongdoing ever since Piya lost her vision in one eye. Two years later, in July this year, she got some justice after the High Court pulled up the State Child Rights Commission and school authorities on the issue.

The school had then apologised to her and paid Rs 15 lakh in compensation which the family incurred for her treatment.  Then Piya’s mother had withdrawn the case against the school administration.

According to family sources, the girl had developed lymphoma, a form of cancer due to the injury and had advised operation.

However, after the operation Piya lost weight and the doctors had advised her to be at home as there is very less chance of her recovery.
