Uttar Pradesh ministers, it appears, simply love to embarrass their own government. A UP minister has a stirred a controversy alleging that government doctors take bribes for preparing medico-legal reports, triggering protests by the medicos.

Minister of state for medical health Shankhalal Majhi’s candid remarks came at the annual function of the Provincial Health Services Association here on Sunday.

“The doctors take bribe for preparing medico-legal reports,” he said.

The minister refused to take back his remark when the doctors protested. “I know this personally. I have concrete evidence to prove what I have said,” he asserted.
Majhi did not stop there. He asked doctors if they could say on oath that they did not take bribes in medico-legal cases. The doctors were mum then.

The doctors’ association, however, criticised the minister’s remark.

“There may be a few doctors who have been taking bribes but it is not proper to make such sweeping comments,” said an office bearer. He added that the association has launched a campaign to identify corrupt doctors within its ranks and take action against them.

In the past, many UP ministers have embarrassed their own government with their remarks.

Threatens to kill

Minister for horticulture Raj Kishore Singh had threatened that he would kill any one who indulged in corrupt practices in his department.

Another senior minister Shivpal Singh Yadav had openly advocated graft. While speaking at a meeting of public works department officials, he said they could ‘steal a little if they worked hard’.

A few days later, Shivpal threatened scribes with arrest if they pressed him to answer their queries.

Earlier, senior minister Azam Khan embarrassed the chief minister with his outburst when he dubbed policemen as ‘dalals’, or middlemen.
“You people sell khaki for money. You are dalals,” he said from the dais at a function.
