Sunil, Pooja among KOA awardees

Indian hockey forward SV Sunil and State swimmer Pooja R Alva feature in this year’s Karnataka Olympic Association awards announced here on Tuesday.

Apart from the duo, 14 other athletes from various disciplines, five veteran sportspersons, one sports journalist and one photographer will be feted at a function at the Raj Bhavan on Thursday evening, KOA president K Govindraj said at a press conference here.

The current athletes will be presented with a cash prize of Rs 25,000, a citation and a memento while the veteran athletes will be given a citation and a memento.

KOA also announced that Sub-junior wrestler Prema Huchanavar from Gadag, who bagged a gold in the Asian Cadet Championships and a bronze in the World Cadet Championship, will receive a special award for her accomplishments.

The awardees list was finalised by an eight-member panel comprising Sports Authority of India (South Centre) Regional Director SS Roy, Bangalore University Physical Education Director Dr R Munireddy, KOA vice-president M Mohan Raj, Arjuna awardee SD Eshan, swimming coach Nihar Ameen, Karnataka Judo Association secretary Shivananda, Karnataka Volleyball Association secretary K Nandakumar and KOA secretary Anantharaju.

List of awardees: Harshith A (athletics), Poorvisha S Ram (badminton), Navaneetha PU (basketball), Shreedhar N Savanur (cycling), Kusuma Singh H (fencing), Syed Imran (football), SV Sunil (hockey), Yallappa Gorav (judo), Spurti Shivalingaiah (tennis), Purushotham K (shooting), Pooja R Alva (swimming), Rajesh BS (taekwondo), Supreeth (triathlon), Anup D’Costa (volleyball), Binitha Devi (weightlifting), Kusumarani (wrestling), PG Viju Poonacha (sports editor, Prajavani), S Eshwar (press photographer).
Veterans: KN Sunderaraj Shetty (athletics), A Sampathkumar (football), N Ulaganathan (football), Manuel Fredricks (hockey), N Prakash (kho-kho).
Special award: Prema Huchanavar (wrestling).
