Belgaum, Nov 20, 2012, DHNS:

Nine vehicles were damaged when miscreants hurled stones at them during a procession organised to mark Tipu Sultan Jayanti here on Tuesday.

A Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus and an ambulance were among the vehicles damaged.

Police have arrested five people, including former corporator Azeem Patvegar, in connection with the incident. Later, the accused had themselves admitted to the district hospital, claiming that they were unwell.

Under attack

The procession commenced from Karnataka Circle and passed through Fort Road, Bhaji Market, Ashok Circle and RTO Circle.

While the procession moved towards Chennamma Circle, the miscreants began to throw stones at passing vehicles.

The stone throwing created panic among members of the public and, a mob began to gather near the Chennamma Circle. Police finally resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the mob, sources said.

Superintendent of Police Sandeep Patil told Deccan Herald that Patvegar and his associates were responsible for the incidents.

Five people suffered minor injuries as a result of the stone throwing.
