Two gold smugglers held at BIA

A team of the Customs Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) team at Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) on Wednesday said it had arrested two persons attempting to smuggle gold into the country.

“We have made one arrest each on Tuesday and Wednesday from the BIA. While one of them is an Indian citizen, the other was holding a Sri Lankan passport,” a senior officer told Deccan Herald.

On Wednesday, officers of AIU arrested an Indian national named Mohammed Zameer Mohammed Ali, 47, who arrived by the Air India Flight (AI994) from Dubai at 5.45am. He had concealed gem-studded 22-carat gold jewellery, weighing 1.445 kg and valued at Rs 33.18 lakh in the soles of his shoes. He had also concealed 24 carat primary gold, weighing 350.6 gm and valued at Rs 11.30 lakh. The AIU has also seized a 32-inch LED television, a laptop and 12 perfume bottles from him.

On Tuesday, Sithie Fazmila Mohamed Muzamil, 43, a Sri Lankan national, who arrived from Colombo by Sri Lankan Airlines (UL171) at 8.15 pm, was arrested for carrying six gold bangles, a gold chain with pendant and a gold ring of 24 carat, totally weighing 482.77 gm and valued at Rs 15.28 lakh, under her burqa.

Both the passengers have been remanded in judicial custody.
