Last Updated 22 November 2012, 18:29 IST

The district unit of BJP has given a call for Kolar Gold Fields bandh on Friday, November 23, to protest against the proposed disposal of waste from Koodankulam nuclear power in the gold mine pits of KGF.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday District unit president N Lakshmaiah said the gold mine pits are filled with water and if uranium waste is dumped into these pits the groundwater will be contaminated and become poisonous. People drinking this water will be exposed to deadly diseases, he said.

He said that to prevent this eventuality the establishing of nuclear waste unit should not be allowed here.

When the matter on the setting up of a nuclear plant in Tamil Nadu is still in the Court the proposal to dispose waste in KGF is premature, he said.

Lakshmaiah blamed Union Minister K H Muniyappa for failing to protect the interest of his home district.  The minister should own responsibility for this situation and resign immediately, he added. The workers burnt the effigy of Muniyappa near the new bus stand circle on Thursday.
