In a suspected case of suicide, a pre-university student succumbed to burns she suffered at her house in J C Nagar Wednesday evening.

Shilpa, 17, was a second year PUC student at RNS College in Vijaynagar. Her mother Raniyamma works at a garment factory and father Panduranga is an electrician at Maddur, their hometown.

On Wednesday, Shilpa had returned from the college in the evening and her mother was still at work. Around 6 pm, neighbours saw Shilpa in flames running down the stairs from her first floor house crying out for help. Immediately, neighbours rushed her to Victoria Hospital. However, she breathed her last at the hospital late in the evening.

Mahalakshmi Layout police, who registered a case, suspect it to be a case of suicide. However, the family members claim that it was an accident and the mishap occurred while Shilpa was preparing coffee on a kerosene stove.
