A 49-year-old Delhi Police head constable allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service revolver inside Kanjhawala police station in outer Delhi on Sunday afternoon.

He mentioned personal reasons in his suicide note for ending his life.

Tejpal, who hails from Bahadurgarh in Haryana’s Jhajjar district, was found dead with a bullet injury on his temple inside the investigating officers’ room in the station. The incident came to light after Tejpal did not respond to calls made by the station’s duty officer at around 4.15 pm.

Didn’t pick up call

“Tejpal had to be sent to attend an accident call, but he did not pick his phone despite repeated attempts,” said a senior police official.

A constable found Tejpal in investigating officers’ room, lying in a pool of blood. He immediately raised an alarm and informed senior police officials.

He was rushed to Satyawadi Raja Harish Chander Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

The victim was deputed on a day shift (between 8 am and 8 pm) on Sunday, and had gone to attend an accident call received at around 9.15 am. He came back to the station around 3 pm and went inside the investigating officers’ room.

It is suspected that he shot himself at point-blank range between 3 pm and 4.15 pm, but none of his colleagues heard any bullet shot.

“A suicide note was recovered from Tejpal’s possession in which he mentioned personal reason to be behind his extreme step,” said B S Jaiswal, deputy commissioner of police (outer).

He blamed a widow Om Devi and her son Amit Malik for the extreme step.
“A case of abetment of suicide is being registered and further investigation is on,” Jaiswal added.

His family members have been informed and police will take their statement to ascertain the exact reason behind his suicide.

“Tejpal did not talk about any kind of stress-related problems with his colleagues. He was behaving with them normally,” another official added.

Tejpal, who is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son, was transferred to Kanjhawala police station in 2011. He joined Delhi Police in 1982 as a constable and worked with various wings and several district police.
