'I am against singing vulgar songs'

I never had plans of becoming a composer. Playback singing was far from my thoughts. Both just happened," says  film composer, musician, singer and lyricist, Amit Trivedi, minutes ahead of his debut performance in the City where his audience awaits eagerly for him to start.

The adrenaline rush was high for Amit who by his own definition is “mainly a studio person. I am the kind of guy who flows with life. Music was my passion since school and college. Like any other boy, I think artistes, band performers triggered the passion of music in me. Somewhere this passion hit the right chord and I pursued it as my career,” he says while emphatically adding, “I am no exception!”

“Whatever I was listening to,” he elaborates, “RD Burman, AR Rahman or Western music, everything was so good that I wanted to be a part of it,” and explains how listening to these made him travel through different emotions. But becoming a programmer or arranger “just happened” when he met “Anurag Sir and he heard my compositions. So I didn't struggle as such.”

Amit’s passion for music began with Om, his band in college, and continued till his debut film – the Rajeev Khandelwal starrer, Aamir.

But it was really Dev D which gave Amit the boost he needed with his career. “While singing for Dev D, I had in mind the basic plot of a boy who is a loser in life and love. Coming from a middle class family, how would this boy behave on failing in love, was what I asked myself. Would he just indulge in madirapaan (drink) and trip?”

Logical, but is he comfortable singing double-meaning lyrics? “I am against it! Vulgarity shouldn’t be imposed on music unless it is needed or the script or scene demands it.” But do filmmakers abide by this suggestion? “It’s a trend and we tend to follow. I have been lucky enough not to get such songs with the exception of one or two.”

How does he feel about his debut performance in Delhi? “I do get a block and get exhausted when handling too many things for long hours. Many times things don’t happen and the pressure to deliver is on  high radar in big projects. Right now, I am running low on energy. I haven't slept and can't think. In our world it’s called ‘creative constipation.’

Still the singer-composer was gung-ho for the performance which made Metrolife ask him about his most dreaded thought. “The day I have to stay away from music and I forget everything will be the scariest day of my life!”
