A 48-year-old assistant sub-inspector of the Delhi Police was choked to death on Sunday night in a fire at his three-storey house in the Mansarover Park area in east Delhi.

The ground floor of Manoj Gaur’s house at Mandoli road in Ram Nagar caught fire around midnight. While the ground floor housed a boutique, Gaur and his family lived on the second floor.

Gaur and his family members reportedly woke up from sleep and rushed to the ground floor to douse the flames. They called the fire brigade at 12:45 am.

“Two fire tenders were rushed to the spot and it took around half an hour to extinguish the fire completely. The fire occurred because of a minor short circuit in an electronic appliance but soon engulfed the entire ground floor,” said a fire brigade officer.

Meanwhile, Gaur was trapped on the second floor. When the fire brigade personnel rushed to his rescue, he was found unconscious. They rushed him to the Guru Teg Bahadur hospital nearby, where doctors declared him brought dead on arrival, said the officer.

Doctors said Gaur died of suffocation as no major burn injuries were located on his body. “Manoj was posted with the wireless communication department of east Delhi as ASI for the past six months,” said the officer.

He is survived by wife and three children, including two daughters.
