Palike computer operators' stir

Last Updated 06 December 2012, 19:34 IST

Hundreds of computer operators working on contract at various BBMP offices across the City staged a protest demanding minimum wages as per the labour laws, contribution to their provident fund (PF) and ESI facility.

Submitting a memorandum to the labour commissioner here on Thursday, the members of the BBMP computer operators’ union poured out their woes. Tanujakshi K M, president of the union, said the Palike was not paying the PF amount to the workers’ accounts on a regular basis.

“When we contacted the PF office, they told us that our accounts did not exist, and in accounts that existed regular payment was not made. We do not have proper facility of ESI for our medical needs.”

These operators are paid mere Rs 3,500 to Rs 6,000 with no increment and are even asked to work on Sundays and holidays.  G K Palani, general secretary of the union, said the officials ask the operators to work on Sundays for long hours with no extra payment.
