Greet the winter in a sweatshirt

Simple and warm, sweatshirts are wonderfully easy to wear and great for winters, suggests Preethi Ravi

Winter has set in and it’s time to unpack those warm clothes and get cozy in them. Sweatshirts are wonderfully easy to wear and great to get tucked into this winter. The fun thing is that they are designed for both boys and girls. Sweatshirts are collarless, long-sleeved, oversize pullovers made of thick cotton. They not only provide warmth, but they also induce and absorb sweat during exercise. You can get both a zipper and non zipper sweatshirt and sweatshirts with matching pants are widely used as jogging suits or even night wear in colder climes.

“Sweatshirts are not like those woollen sweaters which prick your body if worn against your bare skin. They are simple, and made of thick cotton which make them comfortably warm and give a stylish look,” says Shruthi K R, a student at a local college.

Over the years, men have become conscious of their looks and clothes and they do not want to leave any stone unturned trying out new styles. Today, men’s sweatshirts are designed to look macho and stylish, so that you can happily wear them outside the house rather than wearing them only to lounge at home. Sweatshirts are easy to pull on and off, comfortable to wear and stylish to look at.

“I play football and sweatshirts are very useful to keep me warm after exercise or to wear between games,” said N Raghunandan.

Most of the branded stores sell sweatshirts in traditional designs and a spectrum of colours. In a Marks and Spencers store a mannequin wore a checked shirt under a sweat shirt with its collar peeping out for effect. Mix and match seemed to be the name of the game.

Traditionally, sweatshirts were used mostly by athletes but today you can use a sweatshirt for an outing with friends or for a comfy day at home.

“Sweatshirts help keep me warm and during the rains the hood helps me from getting wet. In Bangalore, a sudden shower is no problem, I just slip the hood over my head and am kept dry from the rain,” said Meghana Abraham.

Throwing on a sweatshirt over a shirt, t-shirt or polo shirt gives you that additional warmth and helps you to stay stylish and cozy at the same time. To provide that warmth, these sweatshirts often use brushed jersey material to give combined comfort and warmth. They can be worn on track pants and jeans as they are considered casual wear.
You can also get customised sweatshirts where you can design your own pattern with your preferred colour, making it your favourite clothing through the winter.

“Because of the fairly simple nature of the design of these sweatshirts, you’re paying for the quality of the materials, which means you’ll get great value for money,” says Deeksha Gowda, a young mother who likes wearing them while shopping.

So, if it’s been a while that you have gone shopping for warm clothes, then go and pick up a sweatshirt which is a smart alternative to sweaters, jackets or a coat.
