Good start for Indian paddlers

 Hosts India made a winning start at the Volkswagen World Junior table tennis Championships with boys and girls sealing their group games at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium here on Sunday.

The boys’ team scored a comfortable 3-0 win over Chile and have Hong Kong to contend with in their next outing, while the girls, who registered a convincing 3-0 victory over Australia, will take on France i the next encounter.

With just the top team from each group qualifying, the hosts have an uphill task even before joining the top eight boys sides in Stage IIof the competition.

As for the girls team, their match against France will decide whether they form part of the top 12 teams or go on to play for positions 13 to 20 in the meet.

Results: Junior boys: Group A: (Stage I): India bt Chile 3-0 (Abhishek Yadav bt Sebastian Roman 17-15, 8-11, 11-2, 11-9; Sudhanshu Grover bt Gustavo Gomez 9-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-9; Utkarsh Gupta bt Juan Lamadrid 11-6, 11-6, 12-10). Junior girls: Group C (Stage I): India bt Australia 3-0 (Manika Batra bt Vy Bui 11-8, 11-7, 11-8; T Reeth Rishya bt Anna Du 11-6, 4-11, 11-8, 11-6; Suthirtha Mukherjee bt Sarah Tan 11-5, 11-1, 11-8).
