Congress MLAs enter WB assembly wearing helmets

Kolkata, Dec 12, 2012 (PTI): 15:34 IST
Fearing insecure after yesterday's violence inside the West Bengal assembly, Congress legislators including women members today entered the house wearing helmets.

The majority of the 30 odd legislators of Congress entered the house wearing helmets and holding placards with the inscription "we want to save our heads first."

Speaker Biman Banerjee spelt out the rules that wearing of hats or helmets were not permitted inside the house and insisted on their removal.

The MLAs then heeded to the Speaker direction and removed the helmets.

The Congress members had silently watched proceedings yesterday during the trading of blows and unseemly scenes in the House between ruling Trinamool Congress and Left Front members which had resulted in head injuries to CPI(M) MLA Gouranga Chatterjee, while TMC MLA Mahmuda Begum was hit in the chest and another TMC legislator Pulok Roy was injured in the leg.

The Congress members had yesterday walked out of the House in protest against the violence.

The Congress legislators led by CLP leader Md Sohrab had yesterday submitted a memorandum to Governor M K Narayanan at the Raj Bhavan expressing shock at the unruly scenes in the House and saying that they were feeling insecure and sought his protection.
