'Relief' for teachers as dean gets notice

IP law school head faces probe, says VC

The vice chancellor of IP University on late Thursday evening told teachers, who were on a strike, that a show cause notice has been served to the dean of the school of law and legal studies.

This follows the one-day token hunger strike by 13 out of 16 faculty members, and written complaints to remove the dean over allegations of financial and administrative irregularities.

“The VC also told us that a proctorial inquiry is already going on into the matter, after which an independent inquiry will also take place,” said a member of the teachers’ association.

“We asked him why, when 13 faculty members have submitted written complaints, the dean was not removed or given leave? Now that the VC has one term left, he may as well prolong the matter with such inquiries,” the member said.

The members said a “change” in the behaviour of the VC towards the teachers may be linked to the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University court meeting held on Friday. The teachers were on a one-day token hunger strike here on Thursday.

The university court is the highest statutory body, chaired by the chancellor. It comprises members from the education ministry, directorate of higher education, academicians and a few members of the university.

“We have reasons to believe that the VC was told by higher authorities to settle the matter before the meeting. If any member asks something in this regard at the meeting, he will be able to give a positive reply,” added the member.

According to the member, the dean may get additional responsibility of becoming the centre superintendent (examinations). “The faculty members alleged that she has earlier leaked question papers for her son, who is a student of the school,” the member said.

“When her son is taking the exam, she cannot be a part of the examination process. Universities take undertaking from teachers that they cannot be part of the examination process if their relative is appearing for it,” added the member.
The public relation officer could not be contacted.
