Martyrs remembered on Vijay Diwas

Vijay Diwas was observed at War Memorial of Kadri Park on Sunday. Vijay Diwas was observed to commemorate Martyrs who have sacrificed their lives to safeguard the country.

In a meaningful programme organised by the Dakshina Kannada District Ex- servicemen Association to honour the soldiers who laid down their lives while on duty, the diginitaries including IGP (Western range) Prathap Reddy, Commissioner of Police Manish Kharbikar, District Home Guards Commandant Dr Nidarsh Hegde, ACP (traffic) G V Subramaniam, Brigadier Ichlampadi Najappa Rai, Colonel (retd) Nitteguttu Sharath Bhandary, Lions District Governor M B Sadashiv and others paid floral tributes to the martyrs at the War Memorial.

Three officers of the Indian Army were posthumously conferred the highest military decoration Param Vir Chakra for their gallant service in the 1971 War namely Lance Naik Albert Ekka (14 Guards), Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal (17 Poona Horse) and Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon (18 Squadron Indian Air Force) were rememberd on the occasion.

Students, teachers and NCC cadets from various colleges took part in the commemoration.Vijay Diwas is observed to mark the India’s military victory over its rival Pakistan achieved in 1971, drawing an end to the nine month long Bangladesh Liberation War, which resulted in the creation of new independent country, Bangladesh.
