Education more than just literacy

Last Updated 26 December 2012, 13:49 IST

A university graduate is literate person, but it does not neccessarily mean he or she is educated. Besides literacy and knowledge education should also relate to values like honesty, kindness, truthfulness, friendliness and helpfulness.

Anyone who  has these qualities inculcated in his/her life is a truly educated person.
With an  intention to achieve this,  all educational institutions have framed various methods to impart education.

Accordingly each institution equips itself with teachers and materials to achieve such goals.

These are only basics and providing perfect execution in all aspects is really the crux of the problem for those who heads and manages  the institutions.

Educated persons  in the sense explained above form civilised, progressive society, town, city and country.

In order to create a prosperous country, development in all fields like science, technology, literature and arts must grow simultaneously.

To-day development in  Science and Technology has been so fast that what is  new today is obsolete tomorrow and has to be discarded. Upgrading your own knowledge to the latest level at the same speed is a must.

This applies not only to teachers but equally to management of educational Institutions as they have  to equip themselves with new technology. Otherwise the institution looses its image in the field of education which consdequently leads to lower demand for admission into such institutions.

Teachers have to  be mentally and physically strong and be prepared to gear themselves up.

To update themselves with latest developments is not easy. The IQ level of to-day’s children is high when compared to those fifty years ago.  They learn everything very fast. They seem to have no limitations.

But the memory is comparativel lower than those of earlier generations. Their learning is for today which fades away tomorrow.

Today the buzz word is “competition” at every step and in all fields. Parents want their child to be top in everything for which their contribution is very negligible or nil. They depend mainly on the teacher and the school authorities.

Gone are the days of black board and white chalk; white board and colour pen. It is the age of laptop and e-learning. A child cannot be disciplined with punishment. Even using  harsh words, a loud voice towards can attract punishment to the teacher. Under such circumstances, the task for the teacher is very tough and needs not only patience but also special skills and tolerance.

Another ambition of every child and equally of parents is to be an engineer and serve in information technology companies which is only a notional prestige.

The world also needs a variety of other professionals. There is a need for scientists to conduct research, develop new and improved products and propound new theories.

Study of literature is a must to learn about culture and history of a country.  Everyone of us have in mind something to express and narrate but are unable to do so due to lack of vocabulary and narrative skills. This is possible only by the study of literature.  Likewise there are many subjects to be mastered for self development interpersonal relationship with others.

Whatever is taught in school is only a basic guide upon which the individual has to develop as per his own aspiration and aim. Barriers in education between countries has been eliminated. English as a common langauge for learning is much in practice worldwide, particularly in post graduation and higher levels.

This enables people to exchange their knowledge and improve over it on an universal level. There are International schools everywhere from even kindergarten level.  This helps a child to easily adopt to a new country at any stage. Everyone should make use of these benefits and  learn to lead a happy and peaceful life and make this world worth for what it is.
