Zilla Panchayat President Rekha Huliyappa Gowda has said that emphasis has been given to solve row over shortage of drinking water in the district.

Speaking to presspersons here on Friday, she said that the Panachayat Development officers and engineers have been directed to visit those villages which have been reeling under shortage of water.

“A few villages in Chikmagalur district have been facing acute shortage of water. Borewells are being drilled. However, we are not getting enough water from the new borewells. In such a scenario, we are supplying water through tankers by collecting water from the borewells drilled by private individuals.”

Stating that shortage of drinking water is a common sight during summer, she said that Chikmagalur ZP has initiated precautionary measures. She said “five borewells were drilled at Jodithimmapura two months ago. However, there is no enough water in these borewells. We have drilled another borewell, wherein we have received three inch water. Three borewells which were drilled at Sirabadige have failed and one inch water has been received in one borewell.”

There is no shortage of funds to take up drinking water projects. A sum of Rs four crore has already been utilised for water projects. “We are ready to tackle water woes in the summer. To increase the water-table, check dams and percolation ponds have been constructed in the district,” she added.

The ZP President said that Lokayukta is looking into case pertaining to misappropriation of funds in the projects taken up by watershed department. “We have already collected information on the work taken up by the watershed department in the last five years. Zilla Panchayat meeting will discuss the issue on Saturday and will take decision on future course of action,” she added.
