A 50-year-old principal of an MCD primary school allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his office in outer Delhi’s Narela on Friday.

In his suicide note, he said he was depressed because his relatives were not paying back a Rs 50 lakh loan they had taken from him.

Joginder Saroha, who lived with his family at Punjabi Colony in Narela, was found hanging from the ceiling fan at around 6.45 am. He was the principal of the municipal corporation school for the past two years.

“The incident came to light when the school’s security guard Satish Kumar went to Joginder’s office,” a police officer said. Satish immediately informed police after which Joginder was rushed to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital. “He was declared brought dead,” the officer added.

Satish told police that Joginder had entered the school at around 6 am and went straight to his office.

During investigation, police recovered a note believed to be written by Joginder. Police learnt that he was depressed over the Rs 50 lakh lent to four relatives around five years ago.

“I am depressed as a few years ago I had given a loan of Rs 50 lakh to four of my relatives, but they were not returning my money,” the suicide note reads.

Joginder’s family members claim he had sold his ancestral land in Haryana and taken the loan himself to give the money to his relatives.

Police said despite him asking for it repeatedly they were not returning it.

“This apparently led to depression,” the officer said. But police will question his family members further on this.

Based on the suicide note, police have lodged a case of abetment to suicide under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code.

Joginder’s body was handed over to his family after a post-mortem at Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital.
