A Mandur in the heart of City

Last Updated 01 January 2013, 20:26 IST

At first glance, this six-acre plot with mounds of garbage in Venkateshapuram, Kadugondanahalli, conjures up the image of Mandur landfill. It has been more than five years since this heap of filth in the City is left to rot.

The pile up has become the root cause of health hazards in the area. Persistent dog menace, unbearable stench and mosquito crisis has made life miserable for 37,000-odd citizens living in the area. The locality faces frequent clogging of stormwater drainage.

On most of the days garbage is burnt and thick black smoke rising high in the air is a common sight here. Residents alleged that the Palike, instead of clearing the mound, covered it with mud.

“The garbage trucks do come once in two days, but are irregular. They leave half of the waste there only.

Even neighbours and well-off people dispose waste here. Just a month ago, the road got blocked and drainage water was overflowing on the main road giving off an awful smell. Burning of garbage has been leading to air pollution affecting our health,” complained Kempanna, a resident.

Corporator from the area, Noor Jaan Shariff, lamented that the local people were turning the place dirty. He added that the matter has been brought to notice to the BBMP Commissioner, Siddaiah. who promised him of getting the garbage cleared once the land which is currently in the hands of Bangalore Development Authority is handed over to BBMP.

“Presently, there are disputes regarding the ownership of the land between BDA and a private company. The matter is still in the High Court. We will take action once the disputes are resolved,” Siddaiah said.

Many of the residents who have been staying in the area for more than a decade maintain that the situation wasn’t like this earlier. They claimed that the land was teeming with small huts, hotels and commercial establishments six years ago.

However, ever since the BDA got hold of the land and demolished the illegal structures, the property in survey number 126, 128/4 turned into a stinking yard.

According to residents, the BDA demolished the structures to make way for a depot or a metro station. But no one is sure about it as they were not informed of the demolition. BDA surveyor for the area, Narendra Kumar, said he had no knowledge of the real purpose of acquisition.
