Victim's family wants anti-rape law named after her

The family of the Delhi gang-rape victim on Wednesday demanded that the revised anti-rape law be named after the victim and said the revelation of her name would not bother it even as it urged for “quick” justice in the case.

“We want the revised anti-rape law to be named after her...we will have no objection if the government does it....it will be an honour,” the father of the victim said while speaking to Deccan Herald.

Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor also, on Tuesday, favoured making the name of the 23-year-old victim public. In his tweet, he had said that the revised anti-rape law should be named after her provided her family did not have any objection to it.

BSP supremo Mayawati also said on Wednesday that she had no objection if the anti-rape law is named after the girl but called for building a consensus on the issue.

The family, while expressing its gratitude to the people of the country for the support shown to the victim, said that the culprits should be given stringent punishment.

 “But for the support of the people, it would have remained a simple incident and the culprits would not have been caught,” the father said.

The family also refuted reports that the victim was about to be married.

He expressed satisfaction at the monetary help offered by the Uttar Pradesh government and the Centre though he said the family was yet to receive any money so far.

The UP government has announced  Rs 20 lakh while the Centre has announced a cash assistance of Rs 15 lakh to the family.

The state government has also offered a job to a member of the victim’s family.

The ashes of the victim were immersed in the Ganges in the presence of a large number of people from her village and elsewhere on Tuesday. The local villagers demanded that a hospital be constructed in memory of the victim.

 They said that the woman wanted to serve the mankind after finishing her study. “A hospital in her name will be a fitting tribute to her,” the villagers said.
