Maya against fielding rape accused in elections

BSP supremo Mayawati on Wednesday said that she agreed with the suggestion that the rape accused should not be fielded in the elections.

The BSP supremo also said that the Centre should build a consensus on naming the anti-rape law after the victim now that her family had no objections to her name being made public.

0 at a press conference here. She said that the Delhi gang-rape incident had “awakened” the nation and had shaken the “conscience” of the people to some extent.

Mayawati said that the attitude of the Central and the state governments has not changed much towards the rape incidents or else such incidents would not occur in the country.

“The government should, without any delay, make sure that such cases are tried quickly and the culprits are punished rather that paying only lip service to the victims”', she added.

“Absence of initiating any concrete step in this direction will also be a criminal act'', Mayawati added.

The BSP leader stressed there is a need for inculcating good values in the society. She also asked the film and advertisement makers to be responsible with the content in this regard.
