Cabinet nod for Anekal drinking water plan

Bangalore: Jan 4, 2013 DHNS

The State Cabinet on Thursday approved a proposal to provide drinking water to the residents of Anekal and the Karnataka Housing Board’s Suryanagar layouts and surrounding areas by pumping water from the Shimsha river at a cost of Rs 450 crore.

Briefing reporters on the decisions taken in the Cabinet meeting, Urban Development Minister S Suresh Kumar said water will be pumped from a distance of 65 km under the project. All three phases of Suryanagar layouts and the proposed fourth phase layout will be covered under the project. About two tmc ft of water is required for this purpose, he added.

The Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board, the Karnataka Housing Board, the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj department and the Anekal town municipal council will jointly implement the project, he said.

The Cabinet gave its approval to purchase two parcels of private lands – 600 acres in Togarighatta village of Kolammanahalli hobli of Tumkur district and 476 acres at Sasalu village in Doddaballapur taluk of Bangalore rural district – to develop landfill sites to dump garbage generated in the BBMP limits. The government will purchase the lands on consent basis, the Minister said.

The Cabinet also decided to give away 46.18 acres of land at Rs 99.46 lakh per acre at the proposed Kempe Gowda layout for setting up Indian Institute of Human Settlement. The Institute will be like a university for urban development.

A group of noted entrepreneurs, including Nandan Nilekani and Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, has come forward to set up the Institute, he added.

The Cabinet approved a proposal to construct Arogya Bhavan on 4.35 acres land where Leprosy Hospital is currently located on Magadi Road at a cost of Rs 79 crore.

The proposed Bhavan will house all 37 different offices of the Health and Family Welfare department. It will be a ground plus eight floor building, Suresh Kumar said.

Approval was also given to acquire 3.16 acres of Binny Mill land to be handed over to the Indian Railways. The government has taken about three acres of land belonging to the Railways to implement its Okalipuram corridor project. Hence, the Binny Mill land will be given to the Railways as replacement, he added.
