Cold claims 29 more lives in North

At least 29 people succumbed to the intense cold wave in northern parts of the country on Tuesday as temperatures dropped to sub-zero levels at many places in the region.

Delhiites reel under chilly winds and biting cold with the temperature plunging to 3.3 degree Celsius. Though the minimum was up by almost a degree from the previous day, icy winds forced people to stay indoors during morning hours.

In Uttar Pradesh, temperature dipped below zero in the state capital Lucknow, creating a new record and other places affecting normal lives and movement of trains and air services. At least 22 people died from cold related incidents across the state in the past 24 hours taking the toll this season to 192 in the state.

Night temperature touched 0.2 degree Celsius in the state capital according to the Met department.  Schools up to 12th standard have been closed owing to the intense cold wave conditions till January 12.

The met office said that there would be no let up in the cold wave conditions in the next few days. Temperatures will remain low in the western districts. In Bihar, the sun refused to shine for the fourth consecutive day. The mercury dipped to an all-time low since 2000 to 6.1 degree Celsius in Patna, while the maximum temperature recorded was 9.7 degree Celsius. Gaya district recorded the lowest at 2.7 degree Celsius prompting the education department to close all primary and secondary schools till January 9. Eight flights of the 12 scheduled carriers were cancelled while the rest delayed due to poor visibility.

The situation at Patna railway station was all the more chaotic with majority of the trains running behind schedule. Waiting room was over crowded as those stranded on the platforms made a beeline there to escape the cold wind blowing at a speed of 8-9 km/hour. “This spell will continue for at least a day or two,” said AK Sen, Patna Met Director.

Meanwhile, normal life was thrown out of gear in Rajasthan with Churu recording lowest night temperature of below zero degrees Celsius for third consecutive day.

Pilani recorded a low of zero degree, while Sriganganagar recorded a minimum of 0.9 degrees Celsius.

In Jaipur, the minimum temperature was 4 degrees Celsius about 4 degree below normal. The met office has warned of ground frost and fog conditions in some parts of the state.

Kashmir Valley also continued to reel under intense cold with temperatures plummeting further as Srinagar recorded the season’s lowest of minus 5.5 degrees celsius. The fringes of the famous Dal Lake and other water bodies were frozen due to remarkable fall in night temperature over the past couple of days owing to clear skies.
